The third edition of “FLAGS FOR FUTURE” presented in collaboration with Hydra Book Club and co-curated with Utöpia Flags, opening on September 2, 2023, on Hydra Island. The project currently includes over 40 flags by renowned artists including newly added names such as Alekos Fassianos, Monica Bonvicini, Jonah Freeman & Justin Lowe, Ximena Alarcón, Irini Karayannopoulou, Mike Berg, Rachel Hayes, Koray Tokdemir, Nadia Yaron, Ignasi Monreal, Lola Montes Schnabel, and Waris Ahluwalia. In the Hydra edition of FLAGS FOR FUTURE, ISTANBUL’74 collaborates with the Hydra Book Club, which is now a permanent and evolving member of the cultural community on the beautiful island of Hydra, Greece. The installation in the Historical Archives Museum of Hydra acts as a museum exhibition, a community center, and of course a bookstore. FLAGS FOR FUTURE aims to deconstruct the traditional concept of a flag and explore new horizons for this medium. For the project, the flag is a canvas for unity, collective thought, artistic expression, and a gateway to a utopian vision of our world. The Hydra Book Club's 2023 theme, "Oυτοπία- Utopia Island," delves into literature's powerful symbol of the island as an archetype of a dreamed place where the ideal becomes attainable. The curated literary experience invites visitors to explore what draws us to Hydra and what makes it such a cherished place. This picturesque island setting is the perfect backdrop for the flags to inspire both locals and visitors alike, offering a glimpse of the utopian world we strive to build. FLAGS FOR FUTURE flags are brought to life using upcycled plastic waste fabric to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans, and each flag is an edition of 50. In the spirit of solidarity, FLAGS FOR FUTURE donates the project's proceeds to organizations that tirelessly provide aid and assistance to those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey & Syria.
